New Research Promises Personalized Dietary Guidelines

Here is an interesting article from ScienceDailyhttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gif

Better diets for fighting diabetes, obesity and heart disease may soon be only a finger-prick away. By analyzing the unique metabolic changes in an individual's body, researchers hope to develop more personalized dietary guidelines for improving health, according to an article scheduled for the Dec. 10 issue of Chemical & Engineering News.

For example, a routine blood test that measures hundreds of compounds or more could detect shifts in a person's metabolic balance to predict future health problems. Physicians then could develop a customized diet designed to work with that patient's metabolism, while follow-up blood tests could allow caregivers to track improvements in a person's health status, the article notes.

Gene Link featured on StockProfit.com

This is exciting news for GeneWize's parent company, Gene Link. If the stock is going through the roof, imagine when the product is actually released?!?

Los Angeles, CA --- June 23rd,, 2008 ----Tony Golan, Chief Technical Analyst with StockProfit.com, has featured Genelink Inc. (OTCBB: GNLK) as the StockProfit.com Small-Cap Highlight for the week of June 23rd, 2008.

According to Mr. Golan, “GNLK is starting a strong new long-term up-trend. The stock is now making higher highs and higher lows above a rising 200-day moving average. Relative Strength Differential (RSD), our proprietary indicator for selecting stock in super-strong up-trends, is well above the 25% threshold line, indicating GNLK is very strong and should therefore continue outperforming the S&P 500”.

More information from the UC Berkeley study

I thought this info was extremely exciting. Read on to find out what the researchers found about the benefit of customized vitamins VS. just taking any old supplement. Click here for source

"First author Nicholas Marini, a UC Berkeley research scientist, noted that physicians prescribe vitamins to “cure” many rare and potentially fatal metabolic defects caused by mutations in critical enzymes. But those affected by these metabolic diseases are people with two bad copies, or alleles, of an essential enzyme. Many others may be walking around with only one bad gene, or two copies of slightly defective genes, throwing their enzyme levels off slightly and causing subtle effects that also could be eliminated with vitamin supplements."

“Our studies have convinced us that there is a lot of variation in the population in these enzymes, and a lot of it affects function, and a lot of it is responsive to vitamins,” Marini said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if everybody is going to require a different optimal dose of vitamins based on their genetic makeup, based upon the kind of variance they are harboring in vitamin-dependent enzymes.”

Video: Treating Genetic Flaws with Vitamins-A UC Berkeley Study

What perfect timing! UC Berkeley just released the findings of a huge study that found that by looking at the genetic weaknesses of an individual, we can begin to specifically formulate vitamins to prevent illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity and many others. Hmmm, sounds like just what GeneWize is doing!

In addition, the San Francisco Chronicle has also written up and interesting article, a bit more in-depth, on the findings of the study. Here are some high-lights:

- People commonly take vitamins in the hope of filling gaps in their diet or improving their daily health, but UC's Marini pointed out that most of the recommended daily allowances established for supplements are derived from nutrition studies conducted in the 1940s. "They are based on the assumption that, biochemically, we are all the same," he said.

In fact, studies like this one are affirming that a wide variety of genetic mutations occur among humans. Every person is likely to have a mix of defective genes, and many of the less apparent, minor variants might have a cumulative negative effect on health.

-The Berkeley team noted that humans produce about 600 different enzymes that need vitamins and minerals to carry out their work. They estimate that each person can carry five different defective enzyme genes that are repairable with a higher dose of the related vitamin.

- If the suppositions of the researchers are correct, every person is likely to carry a handful of genetic defects that can be remedied by higher consumption of specific vitamins. One strategy, long used by consumers, is simply to down high doses of all vitamins. Rine believes that it simply makes more sense to match vitamin consumption to each individual's genetically determined vitamin requirements. It avoids waste of vitamins and potential health problems caused by toxic levels of some supplements.

UC Davis Center for Nutritional Genomics & The Five Tenets of Nutrigenomics

Yet another university that is expanding their departments to include the field of Nutrigenomics. Click here to be linked to their site.

Their mission statement, quite like that of GeneWize, is as follows:

The mission of the Center is to reduce and ultimately eliminate racial and ethnic health disparities resulting from environment x gene interactions, particularly those involving dietary, economic, and cultural factors. Our goal is to devise genome-based nutritional interventions to prevent, delay, and treat diseases such asthma, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and prostate cancer. To achieve this goal, the Center is taking a multidisciplinary approach to develop culturally competent methods and novel technologies to elucidate the complex interactions between environmental triggers, genes, and disease.

Here are the official 5 Tenets of Nutrigenomics:

* Under certain circumstances and in some individuals, diet can be a serious risk factor for a number of diseases.

* Common dietary chemicals can act on the human genome, either directly or indirectly, to alter gene expression or structure.

* The degree to which diet influences the balance between healthy and disease states may depend on an individual’s genetic makeup.

* Some diet-regulated genes (and their normal, common variants) are likely to play a role in the onset, incidence, progression, and/or severity of chronic diseases.

* Dietary intervention based on knowledge of nutritional requirement, nutritional status, and genotype (i.e., "personalized nutrition") can be used to prevent, mitigate or cure chronic disease.

Exciting article on Nutrigenomics: The New Science of Genes, Nutrition, and Health

Would You Like a Nutritional Plan That's Tailored to Your Genes?

That's not as far-fetched as it seems, says renowned scientist.

NEW YORK, Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Can the new science of nutrigenomics provide an understanding for the way common nutrition affects health, by altering the expression and/or structure of an individual's genetic makeup? Ask Jim Kaput Ph.D., a leading figure in nutritional genomics, which says that we all respond to foods according to our individual DNA patterns.

Dr. Kaput is Senior Scientist and Science Coordinator, NCMHD Center of Excellence in Nutritional Genomics (CENG), University of California at Davis, Director of the Laboratory of Nutrigenomic Medicine at the University of Illinois Chicago, and Scientific Advisor to NuGO (the European Nutrigenomics Organisation). He spoke at a symposium, Nutrigenomics: The New Science of Genes, Nutrition, and Health. The educational event was held here to introduce science writers to nutrigenomics, the new study of how foods affect our genes and how individual genetic differences affect the way we respond to nutrients in foods.

According to Dr. Kaput, "The conceptual basis for this new branch of genomic research can best be summarized by what I call the Five Tenets of Nutrigenomics:

  1. Improper diets are risk factors for diseases
2. Dietary chemicals alter gene expression and/or genome structure
3. Influence of diet on health depends upon an individual's genetic makeup
4. Genes regulated by diet play a role in chronic diseases
5. "Individualized nutrition" - diets based upon genotype, nutritional
requirements and status - prevents and mitigates chronic disease."

The scientist told the science writers, "Applying the concepts of nutrigenomics to individuals is challenging because of the diversity of genetic makeup and individual responses to the complexity of foods. The latest research in genetics has demonstrated that gene-gene interactions, called epistasis, alter SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) associations with chronic disease outcomes and may alter responses to food.

"While this field is being applied first to health care for the diagnoses and treatments of chronic diseases, and to personal nutrition for maintaining health and preventing chronic diseases," Dr. Kaput said, "we foresee that the application of nutrigenomics to the consumer food market will be occurring over the next five to ten years. The applications may appear to segment the consumer market, but the products that will be developed will be of high value; they will be capable of delivering the right nutrients to the right person at each stage of the life cycle."

The scientist assured the attendees that the potential increased cost of such products will likely be offset by reduced costs for health care for the individual and for society. The common factors in these different applications are genetic testing to assess needs and the matching of genetic makeup to foods or food supplements.

Dr. Kaput said that although the promise of nutritional genomics "has been well accepted by many scientists and business people, converting the science to medical and food products for consumers remains a significant challenge. While individual genes and their variants have been linked to specific foods or nutrients, an individual dietary chemical may interact with many other gene products in the course of absorption, transport, and metabolism. Gene-gene and gene-environment interactions that alter biological processes may change gene variant-nutrient associations differently among persons of different ancestral backgrounds."

We still don't know how much of a nutrient is needed for a biological effect in an individual, Dr. Kaput said, since many nutrigenomic and nutrigenetic experiments aren't testing doses yet. However, answers will be forthcoming, since researchers around the world have initiated an international Nutrigenomics Society that will enable collaborations among various research groups in the near future.
